Purpose of Study

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

School Vision

Our Geography curriculum is designed so that children start with ‘themselves’ and their school or local area before finding out about other areas or regions of the United Kingdom as well as the rest of the world. Google Earth is used to help children develop place and locational knowledge. Children study a range of features of human and physical geography including weather patterns and they recall facts about where we live and the wider world using ambitious geographical vocabulary. They carry out in depth studies of the local area and develop fieldwork skills through a range of opportunities. Trips and visits including residentials help to make geography come alive.

We teach our pupils to:

• encourage children to be inquisitive and speak knowledgeably about the natural and human world.

• appreciate our ever changing world.

• take advantage of what our local area has to offer.

To help us achieve this we:

• Encourage children to ask questions about the human and physical geography of places.
• Teach children to appreciate similarities and differences between people, places, communities and countries.
• Develop locational and place knowledge and use high quality and engaging resources to enrich and inspire.
• Teach and then expect children to use high quality and ambitious geographical vocabulary.
• Develop geographical skills and field work skills both onsite and during trips and visits.
• Teach children to be globally aware and make suggestions about how we can preserve our planet.
