Our Learning

Summer Term

Maths
During the summer term, we will begin by learning about shape. This will include angles in triangles and other polygons, angle rules and exploring nets of 3D shapes. We will then move on to position and direction, where children will develop their understanding of coordinates, translations and reflections. We will continue to develop our arithmetic skills and times table knowledge. Please use Times Table Rock Stars at home to keep practising.

English
Our term starts with thinking about summer and writing a setting description. We will then continue using Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to inspire a range of writing, including a diary entry and a formal letter. We will also continue to develop our spelling, punctuation and grammar skills throughout the term.

Reading
In reading, we will be exploring a variety of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry as we prepare for SATs. Children will continue to develop their comprehension skills by answering a range of questions linked to these texts. They will also focus on identifying and defining unfamiliar vocabulary to support their understanding.

We will continue to read a wide range of texts throughout the term to ensure that children are exposed to different authors, genres and styles of writing.

Science
Our science topic this term is evolution and inheritance. Children will learn about how living things have changed over time and how characteristics are passed from parents to offspring. They will also explore adaptation and consider how animals and plants have evolved to suit their environments.

History
This term, we are learning about the history of the banknote and the significant individuals who have appeared on them. Children will explore what makes someone historically significant by studying figures such as Alfred the Great, Elizabeth I, Mary Seacole and other influential figures. They will evaluate the contributions these individuals made and consider who should appear on the new £10 note.

Geography
In geography, we will be developing our fieldwork skills through a visit to Barmouth. Children will take part in activities that help them collect and analyse geographical data while learning more about the local environment.

PE
PE is on Thursday and Friday this term. We will be developing our skills in athletics, followed by Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) later in the term. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on these days so that they are ready to take part in lessons.

French
This term, children will be developing their language skills by learning vocabulary linked to holidays and travel. They will practise speaking, reading and writing in French while learning how to discuss holiday plans, clothing and different countries. Children will also begin using the future tense and apply their learning when planning their own holiday to France.

Design and Technology
This term, children will be taking part in a cooking unit delivered by SIPs. They will develop practical cooking skills and learn more about preparing food safely while creating a range of dishes.

Art
In art, children will explore the theme of memories and identity through a range of creative activities. They will experiment with different materials and sculptural techniques, including relief work and 3D art, before designing and creating their own final piece.

RE
RE this term will continue to explore different beliefs and ways of life. Children will deepen their understanding of religion and consider how beliefs can influence the choices people make.

PSHE
In PSHE, we will be learning about safety and the changing body. Children will explore how to stay safe online, develop their understanding of healthy relationships and learn about the changes that happen as they grow older. They will also develop basic first aid knowledge and learn how to respond in emergency situations.

Music
In music, we will be learning and rehearsing songs for our end of year production, The Greatest Show. Children will practise their singing and performance skills as we prepare for the show later in the term.

Look at what we have been doing...

This week in art, we explored Mayan art by looking at spirit companion symbols and using them to inspire artwork that represented us. We then learned about chiaroscuro, focusing on how light and dark can create impact, before moving on to street art. For our final pieces, we combined these ideas to create artwork that each conveyed a clear message.
