YEAR 3 CURRICULUM
YEAR 3 CURRICULUM
AUTUMN TERM SUBJECT CONTENT 
This term, we will be focusing mainly on place value. The children will Iearn to identify the values of each digit in a three digit number. They will also learn to compare and order numbers up to 1000. The children will then use their knowledge of place value to mentally add and subtract three- digit numbers and ones, tens and hundred. After which they will move on to adding and subtracting three digit numbers using column addition and subtraction. We will also be practising our problem solving skills each week and working on our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. 
In English, we will be reading ‘It Was a Dark and Stormy Night’ and ‘The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe’. Our writing pieces will be based around these books. Alongside our work on our class novel, we will continue to practise our comprehension skills, handwriting skills, learn and practise spellings and improve our grammar. We will also cover various text types, such as poetry, instructions, and play scripts. 
Our topic this term is ‘Rocks and Soils’. The children will learn about how rocks are formed, they will identify the simple physical properties of some rocks and compare and group rocks together on the basis of their simple physical properties. The children will also learn how soils are formed and investigate the properties of soils. The children will record their findings using simple scientific language, use results to draw simple conclusions and raise further questions. 
Our Topic this term is The Stone Age and it will be history focused. Our learning challenge question for this term is ‘How can we run a museum to share the History of Britain and the World?’ and our final learning outcome is to contribute to the school museum. In order to be able to do this, the children will use different resources to research the Stone Age period and how people survived. They will also demonstrate their grasp of chronology by placing important prehistoric events on a timeline. At the end of our topic, the children will write a non-chronological report about The Stone Age. 
Our focus this term is Hinduism. The children will learn about the Hindu traditions, worship, celebration and communities. They will also discuss what it means to be a Hindu in Britain today. 
This term we will be focusing on Games. As part of our lessons, we will focus on developing different skills across a range of games. The children will also suggest ways in which game play can be improved. All these skills will be essential for children to participate in a game of tennis and basketball. SPRING TERM SUBJECT CONTENT 
This term, we will be focusing mainly on multiplication and division. The children will Iearn how to multiply and divide numbers using written methods. They will also learn strategies to multiply and divide mentally. We will also focus on time, fractions and angles. We will continue to practise our problem solving skills each week and work on our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. 
In English, we will be reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Enchanted Wood. Our writing pieces will be based around these books. Alongside our work on our class novel, we will continue to practise our comprehension skills, handwriting skills, learn and practise spellings and improve our grammar. We will also cover various text types, such as poetry, newspaper reports, and setting descriptions. 
Our topic for Spring 1 is Animals including humans. The children will learn about the food groups and the importance of choosing nutrient-rich foods. They will also learn about bones, muscles and the skeleton.In spring 2, we will be learning about ‘Light’. The children will learn about the presence of light, shadows and ultraviolet rays and how we can protect ourselves from them. The children will record investigation findings using simple scientific language, use results to draw simple conclusions and raise further questions. 
Our Topic this term is Rivers and Mountains (Volcanoes) and it will be geography focused. Our learning challenge question for this term is ‘How can we plan an expedition to climb on a mountain and travel on a river?’ and our final learning outcome is children will participate in an expedition in the local area. Children will be learning how to use maps and locate famous rivers, mountains and volcanoes around the world. 
Our RE lesson this term will provide the children an understanding of what the bible is and why it is valid today for understanding God. The children will learn about the Creation story, God’s love for people, The Holy Trinity, baptism and the Easter story. Our final learning outcome is to perform an Easter assembly. 
In spring 1, we will be focusing on Dance. As part of our lessons, the children will learn to perform dances using a range of movement patterns.Our focus in spring 2 is Gymnastics. The children will be encouraged to participate in movements and gymnastics actions. They will attempt to bring explosive moves in to floor work through turning, twisting and spinning. SUMMER TERM SUBJECT CONTENT 
This half term, we will be focusing mainly on number. The children will Iearn to write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit number and three-digit number times one-digit numbers using mental and progressing to formal written methods. They will also focus on solving problems including missing number problems, involving multiplication. We will also be practising our problem solving skills each week and working on our times tables. 
In English, we will be reading ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and ‘The Iron Man’ and our writing pieces will be based around these books. Alongside our work on our class novel, we will continue to practise our comprehension skills, handwriting skills, learn and practise spellings and improve our grammar. We will also cover various text types, such as poetry, instructions, and play scripts. 
During this term our topic will be Forces and Magnetic. The children will compare how things move on different surfaces and observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others. They will also compare and group different materials using magnets. The children will record their findings using simple scientific language, use results to draw simple conclusions, make predictions for new values, suggest improvements and raise further questions. 
Our learning challenge question for this term is ‘Can we create a gladiator fight based on Roman traditions?’ and our final learning outcome is to organise our school’s gladiator fight. In order to be able to do this, we will investigate the Romans, its traditions, and the customs of gladiator’s battle. The children will also suggest the causes and consequences of this main event. The children will also have the opportunity to design and make their own gladiator tunic-a distinctive roman clothing which was generally worn under the Toga. As part of our Topic write, the children will create an informative leaflet. 
This term we will focus on religious figures, places of worship and Holy books. This will give the children the opportunity to know about and understand a range of religions, so that they can describe and explain beliefs and practices and recognise the difference that exists within communities. We will be learning about Islam, Sikhism and Judaism. 
This term we will focus on athletics, to help the children develop their running, throwing and jumping skills. The children will also be encouraged to discuss their personal performances and the performance of a partner in athletic activities and advise a partner on ways to improve. Skills learnt during these sessions, will help the children to participate in our end of term sports day.
