Governing Body
Dear Parents and Carers,
On behalf of the Governing Body, we would like to welcome you to our school website and provide you with an insight into the role of the Governing Body.
Our Governing Body is made up of 12 governors from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of different skills all of whom work hard to support the Headteacher, staff and pupils.
As a Governing Body we work with the school to ensure that it delivers good quality education and together with the Headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management of the school, we set the school’s aims and policies.
There are different types of governors:
Parent Governors – Selected and voted from parents and carers of pupils at the school.
Staff Governors – Selected and voted from staff employed at the school.
Local Authority Governors – Appointed by the Local Authority.
Co-Opted Governors – Appointed by the Governing Body with particular skills or experience.
Our Key Roles are:
Setting the strategic direction for the school.
Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and the performance management of staff.
Overseeing the financial performance of the school, making sure its money is well spent and ensuring financial accountability and sustainability.
Other duties include:
Determining how the school’s budget is spent including Pupil Premium
Appointing and dismissing staff
Hearing appeals and grievances
Setting standards for pupils’ behaviour and discipline
Making sure school buildings are welcoming and safe
Monitoring the school’s aims and policies
The Full Governing Body meets once every half-term and there are 2 sub-committees:
The Finance and Personnel Committee:
- Meet once each term
- Review and approve all policies related to Finance and Staffing.
- Approve the annual budget, and review and approve changes to the budget during the year.
- Review leases and contracts, including Traded Services.
- Ensure that the school are following the correct financial procedures (Schools Financial Value Standards).
- Ensure Best Value principles apply, including those related to correct processes for quotes and tenders.
- Approve expenditure and virements over £6,000.
- Appoint staff, in line with Safer Recruitment principles, and consider applications for changes to contracts.
- Review staffing structure, to ensure it meets the needs of the school.
- Review staff work/life balance, well-being and equal opportunities, including absence rates
- Implement the Appraisal Policy and review Teacher Performance and Pay.
- Monitor staff training and its impact.
- Review and approve all policies related to Health and Safety.
- Monitor all Health and Safety Audits, Reports and Action Plans.
- Comply with current Fire Safety, and Health and Safety regulations.
- Ensure Risk Assessments are carried out and reviewed regularly, including those for educational visits.
- Monitor that all health and safety checks, including Fire Safety are being completed according to the school monitoring cycle.
- Inspect the school site, to enable maintenance and improvement, including security of the site.
- Regularly receive reports on accident statistics, including incidents of violence or aggression.
- Ensure staff and governors receive appropriate training.
- Review safeguarding procedures, and monitor current safeguarding provision through termly reports.
Pupil Progress, Standards and Curriculum Committee:
- Meet every half-term.
- Review and approve all policies related to the curriculum.
- Monitor and review school data outcomes, including comparisons to national results (including for key groups of pupils).
- Monitor and review school targets.
- Monitor and review the quality of teaching across school.
- Ensure the school is meeting the national curriculum requirements, and that it is meeting pupils' needs, including spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
- Review and update the school self-evaluation and school improvement plan.
- Review and monitor behaviour and attendance.
Individual governors also take a lead role on behalf of the Governing Body in areas including Health and Safety, Pupil Premium, Child Protection and Safeguarding, Attendance and Special Educational Needs. All governors report back on their visits to school at Full Governing Body meetings.
In addition to attending meetings, governors visit the school regularly attending special events, meeting with staff and pupils and monitoring progress.
We monitor progress in a variety of ways including: Presentations from subject leaders; Learning Walks; Book Scrutinies, attending Pupil Progress meetings and interviews with pupils. We also receive reports from the Head Teacher and other leaders, the Local Authority Adviser, Outside Agencies and the Junior Leadership Team.

Brief description of the remit to support specific responsibilities:
Attendance & Community – engagement, communication, increased understanding. Look at feedback from Parent Questionnaires and work with School to analyse. Look at methods of communication with School, and the use/development of the website. Examine After-School provision. Work closely with Attendance Officer on Attendance.
Promotion of British Values – knowledge that this is taking place eg assemblies, visits, School Council.
EAL – Progress for specific groups of children and look at interventions to support/how are these children accessing the curriculum.
Governor visits will need to – have a focus, report back on what was seen and what you would like to see next time.
